It’s not a magic trick. It’s not therapy. And it’s not about using the right words to get what you want.
It’s a holy, sacred, ongoing conversation between a holy God and the people He’s redeemed.
Prayer is not a performance. It’s not a box to check. And it’s not a vending machine where you press A4 and expect healing, success, or peace to fall out.
Prayer is communion with God : real, raw, reverent connection.
It’s where worship happens, sin gets exposed, hearts get re-centered, and lives get changed.

So drop the mask. Come as you are. But come with a holy reverence.
Because Jesus did. And because we desperately need to.
Prayer is not for the spiritually elite. It’s for the weak, the tired, the stuck, and the seeking. That means it’s for all of us.
Let’s walk through a simple, biblical structure for prayer based on the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13), but applied through the lens of humility, Scripture, and bold honesty.
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name…”
Before you ask for anything, acknowledge who God is. He's not just your helper, He's your Father. He’s not just close, He’s holy.
This builds a right view of God, which leads to a right heart in prayer. You don’t barge into the throne room. You come humbly, knowing the door was opened by the blood of Jesus.
“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
This is the part most of us skip. We’re good at asking for what we want, not great at surrendering to what He wants.
Here’s the question: Are you really okay with God saying “no” to your prayer?
Because if not, you’re not praying, you’re demanding.
God's kingdom doesn't revolve around your plans. And prayer isn't about getting your will done in heaven. It's about getting heaven's will done in you.
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Not “monthly bread.” Not “bread for the year.” Just today’s bread.
We ask for what we need, trusting God to provide. It's not greedy, it's humble. It says, “I’m not self-sufficient. I need You.”
If you're struggling financially, emotionally, relationally; say it. Don’t try to impress God with strong-sounding prayers. He’s drawn to weakness, not strength (2 Corinthians 12:9).
“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
This is the part where you come clean. No hiding. No performing. Just honesty.
Prayer is where sin meets grace. You confess what’s broken and in return, God covers it with mercy.
But it doesn’t stop with receiving forgiveness. You also extend it. You let go of bitterness. You forgive as you've been forgiven.
As Chandler often puts it, “You cannot stay bitter and encounter the living God.”
“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
This is where spiritual warfare becomes real. You’re not just praying for a good day, you’re praying to survive the war.
This world is full of temptation and evil. Prayer is where you ask God to guard your heart, protect your mind, and lead you in righteousness.
Let’s be honest, many people pray and wonder why they feel like their prayers bounce off the ceiling. Scripture gives us some serious answers:
God is not obligated to listen to the prayers of the unrepentant or prideful. He hears the cries of the humble.
Don’t get caught up in the idea that longer prayers are better or that more emotion equals more power. Jesus warned about this directly:
“When you pray, do not heap up empty phrases... for they think that they will be heard for their many words.” — Matthew 6:7
God is not moved by theatrics. He is moved by truth and sincerity.
If we want to pray like Christ, we must think biblically, not culturally.
And always remember, prayer is not a tool to get your will done in Heaven, but God's will done in you.
“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” — James 5:16
Here’s how to actually build a prayer life:
You won’t always feel it. Some days, it’ll be powerful. Other days, it’ll feel like work. Do it anyway. Not because it always feels good, but because God is always worthy.
As Voddie would say: “We don’t worship God based on our emotions. We worship based on who He is.”
Prayer is not a religious task, it’s a relational gift.
So pray. Even when you don’t know what to say. Even when you’re angry. Even when you’re tired.
Pray because God listens. Pray because Christ intercedes. Pray because the Spirit helps.
And above all, pray in a way that humbles your heart, lifts your eyes, and aligns your life with the gospel.
